PRESVYTERA NIKKI STEPHANOPOULOS

 Presvytera Nikki Stephanopoulos retired as Director of News and Information/Public Relations and Press Officer of the Archdiocese on August 1, 2008, after 25 years of service to the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.She continues to serve as a member of the Communications Commission of the National Council of Churches and Trustee and Executive Committee member of the National Interfaith Cable Coalition (Odyssey Networks).

Born in Rochester, Minnesota she is Journalism and Public Relations graduate of the University of Minnesota.  Following her graduation she came to New York City in 1955 and worked for three years as Director of the College Crusade for Freedom (Radio Free Europe).  Following her marriage in 1958 to Robert Stephanopoulos, a graduate of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Seminary, they spent a year in Greece where he studied at the University of Athens School of Theology and Nikki edited the Athens Daily Post.  Father Robert, Dean of the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity from 1982-2007, retired as Dean Emeritus on October 15,2007.  During their pastorates at St. Demetrios, Fall River, MA; the Church of Our Saviour Rye, NY and Sts. Constantine and Helen Cathedral, Cleveland, OH. Presvytera pursued her public relations interest as volunteer in the parish and community.

While in Cleveland she was founding editor of The llluminator, newspaper of the Greek Orthodox Diocese of Pittsburgh and editor of the Hellenic Voice a Greek American newspaper.  Since their return to New York in 1982, she continued her volunteer service as a Board member of the Neighborhood Coalition for Shelter for 20 years.  She had an active role as an Orthodox press liaison in the Seventh Assembly of the World Council of Churches (Canberra, Australia, l99l), and as press officer for the Pilgrimage of Ecumenical Patriarch Dimitrios in the United States in 1991, and the Visit of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in l997. She was the editor for various Archdiocese publications including lakavos: The Making of an Archbishop (1996), Patriarch Dimitrios in the USA (1991), The Treasure of Archbishop Michael of North and South America (2008), Tell the Good News...Public Information and Outreach (1991), the 30th, 35th and 37th Clergt-Laity Congress Albums, Yearbooks (2001-08) various publications of the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity and coordinator of the Cathedral TV broadcast ministry.

Father Robert and Presvytera have four children and two granddaughters: Mother Agapi Superior of the Orthodox Convent of St. Nicholas (Diocese of Syracuse); George, husband of Alexandra Wentworth and father of Elliot Anastasia (9)and Harper Andrea(6),  Host of This Week with Gearge Stephanopoulos,Co-Anchor of Good Morning America and Political Director of ABC Television; Marguarite, Events Coordinator of the Bariatric and Metabolic lnstitute of the Cleveland Clinic and Andrew, a psychotherapist in Santa Monica, CA.

 

PROFESSOR JAMES SKEDROS

James C. Skedros is the Michael G. and Anastasia Cantonis Professor of Byzantine Studies and Professor of Early Christianity at Hellenic College and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, Brookline, MA, where from 1998 to 2002 he served as Acting Dean of Holy Cross.  A graduate of Holy Cross, Dr. Skedros received his Th.D. from Harvard Divinity School in the History of Christianity.  From 1996 to 1998 he was Assistant Professor of Orthodox Studies at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California.  His research areas include popular religious practices in Late Antiquity and Byzantium, Byzantine hagiography, pilgrimage, and Christian and Muslim relations.  As a Fulbright Scholar, he has conducted field and archaeological research in Thessaloniki, Greece related to the veneration of St. Demetrios.  He is married and has three daughters.
