 ANNUNCIAITON CATHEDRAL GOYA 2008 CHAMPIONS

On March 9, 2008 over 550 players, coaches, family and friends attended the annual Metropolis Athletic Awards Dinner held at the St. Nectarios Parish in Roslindale.  More than 30 teams proudly represented their parishes as they competed for the Championship trophy in three divisions.

The J.O.Y. division consisting of boys and girls between the ages of 9-13 had seven talented teams who played with an abundance of heart and determination.  The Championship game was a match between the St. Nectarios Parish in (Roslindale, MA) and the Taxiarchae Parish (Watertown, MA) teams.  In a highly contested battle with momentum changing from play to play the Taxiarchae team defeated the St. Nectarios team 35-31.

The G.O.Y.A. girls division, ages 13-18 displayed a high caliber of play throughout the tournament.  Almost every game was decided by a few points and spirited play.  The Championship game was a contest between the teams of the Annunciation Cathedral (Boston), and St. Demetrios (Weston).  The game itself consisted of many early lead changes and an intenseness that only a Championship game can have.  The score of the final game was 38-37.

The G.O.Y.A. boys division featured quality basketball as all the teams played with much purpose and resolve.  The championship was a game for the ages --- the Annunciation Cathedral Team (Boston) team battled against the St. Vasilios (Peabody) team.  It was as close a game as one can imagine as each team maneuvered itself for a winning situation. Finally, the cathedral team persevered with a 55-53 victory!

The banquet allowed for a beautiful ending to a terrific season. On behalf of His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios, the league honored all the players and coaches with trophies, plaques, and gifts for each participant of the leagues.  We look forward to next season for more fellowship and fun!
